About Jazz Evensong

Evolving out of two ancient services of prayer as the sun is setting—vespers and compline—the service of Evensong is an opportunity to put the events of the past day into perspective, to ground one’s body, mind and spirit in preparation for the restorative night of sleep, when in our dreaming, our subconscious will continue the creative work of making sense of our experiences.

Jazz, as Ken Burns says, is “a profound intersection of freedom and creativity”. So, whether you are a seasoned jazz lover or a newcomer to the genre, you will be sure to find something to speak to you at this unique and moving experience of making sense of your day. Don’t miss your chance to be a part of this inspiring and intimate celebration of faith and music. All are welcome!

About the musicians

Kim Greenwood (vocals) is a multi-faceted vocalist and educator whose work spans genres including jazz, pop, musical theatre, and classical. Her professional career began three decades ago at Grafton St. Dinner Theatre in Halifax, N.S., and since then she has performed in many ensembles as a solo artist to soloist with full orchestra. She has created and performed in numerous shows including “Ella at 100”, “All About That Verse”, “The Carpenters and Burt Bacharach”, and “Doris and Judy Together”. She was music director and production coordinator for Attitude Theatre's highly successful “Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill” staged at Hermann’s, Canada’s longest continuously running jazz club. Kim has twice been honoured as a JUNO awards judge in the Vocal Jazz Album and Adult Contemporary Album of the Year categories.  She is also the lead vocalist with the Commodores Big Band, Victoria's oldest big band dance band. Kim will be recording her first full-length album in the spring of 2026. Kim’s voice resonates with a warmth and expressive depth, reminiscent of vocalists from the golden eras of jazz and classic pop; her music is heartfelt, and every performance tells a story.

Megan Greenwood (vocals) Bio coming!

Karel Roessingh (piano) is a composer, arranger, producer and musician who has written scores for over five hundred television episodes, and many award-winning films, documentaries, and promotional videos.  He has recorded and produced more than fifteen of his own CDs, including several for the Canadian Naturescapes series distributed world-wide, two jazz trio CDs and many solo piano CDs.  His latest solo project, Birdsong in the Parkade, was recorded with a Steinway grand piano in a Victoria parkade, with original music based on birdsongs collected across Canada.  He has performed with symphony orchestras and rock, jazz, folk, show and country bands throughout the world.  He’s recently recorded with Edie Daponte, Garnett Betts, Maureen Washington and many others, and produced and performed on an album with Canadian folk legend Valdy.  Karel has served for two terms as mayor and now serves in his sixth term as a municipal councillor in the Highlands. www.roessong.com

Louis Rudner  (bass) is a native of southeast Michigan. He took up violin at age eight and began studying classical music as well as American traditional music.  Inspired by the energy of the music from the 1960’s beginning with Cream, Jimi Hendrix, and Santana, Louis took up the electric bass to experiment with and explore a different sound palette.  He studied the Double Bass under Rodney Whitaker, earning a bachelor’s and master’s degree in jazz performance at Michigan State University.  While in university, he immersed himself in the rich local music tradition and continued honing his craft in every pub, club and performance hall within reach.  In addition to his love for music, he has a passion for the outdoors, and great cuisine from around the world. After several years playing music around the world and at sea, Louis is now based in Victoria.  He is performing, teaching, and developing several creative projects at this time.
